Dalton Brothers Trio Featured in Salute to Spring Concert

The Dalton Brothers Trio will perform at 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 23, at the City Brewery Hospitality Center, 1111 3rd St., in the La Crosse Area Jazz Society’s Salute to Spring Concert.  This trio has been a featured act at the Great River Jazz Fest in the past.

Led by Santa Fe pianist Bert Dalton, the group includes Bert’s brother Larry Dalton from Onalaska on bass, and Winona drummer Rich MacDonald.

In a career of 30 plus years, Bert Dalton has performed with Herbie Mann, Anita O’Day, Regina Carter, Butch Miles, Ira Sullivan, Paul Wertico, Bud Shank, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton and many others.  His Latin jazz quartet Yoboso won the 1995 B.E.T Jazz Discovery Competition, was twice awarded Best Recording of the Year by the New Mexico Music Industry Coalition, and reached top 10 airplay in Miami.

Originally from the Chicago area, Bert has toured extensively throughout the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as three tours of Australia and New Zealand, most recently headlining the Manly International Jazz Festival, Australia’s largest.

In addition to being the director of finance for the School District of Onalaska, acoustic bassist Larry Dalton is a regular feature in local jazz venues.  He has performed with Mike James, John Paulson, the Phat Cats, Al Townsend, Greg Balfany, Dave Kies, Chuck Chihak, Jim Knutson, Larry Price, and the Bobby Lewis Quartet, among others.  Larry is a member of the bluegrass band String Ties, and the traditional string band Grand Picnic.  Before coming to Wisconsin, he was a professional musician in southern California.

Winona State University Associate Professor of Music Rich MacDonald has performed with Milt Hinton, Slide Hampton, Arturo Sandoval, George Benson, Eddie Daniels, and many others.   He is the principal percussionist with the La Crosse Symphony and is regarded as a “drummer’s drummer” in the local jazz scene.  Before coming to Winona, MacDonald was on the faculty of University of North Texas, the University of Texas at Arlington and Eastfield College. As a drumset and percussion specialist, he has presented clinics throughout the U.S. and Canada.
